It is a way to develop an estimate of the time required, the potential availability of proper sources, and, frankly, the feasibility of moving forward on the project. If I think there might be a more suitable genealogist for the client's needs, I will say so and will help find that person.
Before performing work, my client and I will have in-depth discussions on what work is included in the basic rate and what work will incur additional charges.
In general, though, my rate structure is as follows:
As other potential expenses become apparent, I will consult with my clients before moving forward.
Before performing work, my client and I will have in-depth discussions on what work is included in the basic rate and what work will incur additional charges.
In general, though, my rate structure is as follows:
- Online research, time spent in a library or government repository, and time needed to write the report to my client: $30/hr.
- Travel to a library or government repository by car: Standard IRS rate, currently $0.56/mile plus tolls, if applicable.
- Photocopying, ordering documents, postage, etc.: The actual cost incurred, which has ranged in the past from $0 to $30/document.
- Obtaining society record copies (DAR, SAR, etc.) of other applicants using parts of the client's lineage, typically $10 to $40 per record copy. A record copy is an application that has been approved by a society, including notations by the society's genealogists.
As other potential expenses become apparent, I will consult with my clients before moving forward.
